"Tinglar’s Journey"

This piece captures the epic, cyclical journey of the tinglar (leatherback sea turtle) as she navigates the vast ocean to travel to and from the nesting shores of Culebra, Puerto Rico. Carved into the texture of the linoleum print is an original poem that translates in English to “flippers like wings flying in the ocean sky,” mirroring the graceful, weightless motion of these ancient travelers. They are currently on the endangered species list."Tinglar’s Journey" and "Siam near Rincón, Puerto Rico" are proudly exhibited with the Taller Boricua/Rafael Tufiño Printshop collective based in El Barrio NYC, at the 26th Biennial Conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals in San Juan, Puerto Rico from October 17-23, 2026. This presentation bridges the worlds of art and marine conservation, raising awareness about endangered species and climate change.

"Siam near Rincón, Puerto Rico"

This print tells the unique story of Siam, a magnificent humpback whale known for the distinctive markings on his fluke (tail) that strikingly resemble the eyes of a Siamese cat. Documented along the vibrant western coast of Puerto Rico, Siam’s migration is a celebrated symbol of the island's seasonal marine life. Through intricate linoleum carvings, this artwork captures the fluid power of his tail breaking the surface near Rincón, a sanctuary where these gentle giants return year after year. They are currently on the endangered species list.

Josie Gonzalez Artist Bio

Josie Gonzalez (b. New York, NY) is a visual artist of Puerto Rican/Borikéña descent, who lives and works in New York City. As a teen artist, she apprenticed under Jorge Soto Sanchez at the Taller Boricua/Puerto Rican Art Workshop in El Barrio/East Harlem, and created community murals with CityArts. She embraces her interest in building and representing community through her murals and public art works that can be found throughout NYC.In addition to her passion for public art, she has a dedicated studio practice where she is creating a new series of small paintings, and mixed media artworks. Starting in 2026, she has been contributing to the Taller Boricua/Rafael Tufino Printshop collective projects, creating hand-carved linoleum block prints that reflect Puerto Rican identity, culture and activism.She is committed to her art education practice, and has piloted and led museum education programs for multiple NYC museums. Her artwork has also been featured in multiple museum group and employee art exhibitions.
